Everything You Need to Know About Using Glass Paints

Glass paints let anyone express their creativity. You can use classic acrylic paints to paint glass, as they work on any surface, but for a more lasting effect, we recommend special paints made specifically for glass. Use them to breathe new life into old vases or small plates, create an original gift in the form of painted drinking glasses, or turn an ordinary canning jar into a stylish decoration.

Glass paints come in various types and packs. The key thing to know is that their durability depends on baking them in the oven. Before use, check whether the painted item will fit in the oven or electric oven, and read the paint instructions. They specify the temperature and baking time needed to make the paint resistant to washing. If the item is not suitable for the oven, set the paint with a hair dryer.

Surface Preparation and Types of Paint

You can find transparent and opaque paints on the market. The difference is significant: transparent paints (labeled "transparent") create a stained-glass effect, while opaque paints (labeled "opaque") provide coverage. For more intense colors, apply a second coat after 20 minutes to 1 hour. With transparent paints, extra coats reduce transparency. For better visibility, place a piece of paper inside the item.

Preparing glass before painting

The surface must be perfectly clean. Wash the item with warm water and detergent. Some paints require an additional cleaning with alcohol, so always read the instructions. After washing, dry thoroughly with a paper towel or cotton cloth.

Choosing Brushes and Painting Technique

Both synthetic and natural brushes are suitable. Synthetic brushes are less expensive, while natural brushes create finer strokes. For beginners, we recommend medium round brushes. If you are not confident painting freehand, use stencils with a stippling sponge.

Tools for painting glass

First, sketch the outlines with a permanent marker (it won’t show through the paint) or a special outline paint, which will make the design stand out. You can also create the whole piece using glass markers. Never mix paints with water, as moisture reduces adhesion.

Stir the paint thoroughly before use. If your project doesn’t turn out as planned, remove the paint by soaking it overnight in warm water with detergent.
