Why Does Paper Buckle in a Frame, Even Behind Glass?

The temperature and humidity indoors are constantly changing, and paper in a frame responds to these changes too. Where the paper touches the glass, it reacts to humidity sooner than the center of the paper, which eventually causes it to buckle.

So How Can You Prevent Buckling?

Since the backing and paper expand and contract at different rates, it really helps not to glue the paper to the backing all the way around its edges.
Another great solution is to use a mat (passe-partout) and attach your artwork to it with tape. If you place a spacer between the mat (passe-partout) and the glass, there will be enough room for air to circulate and humidity to equalize.
