Make Your Own: Decorative Candles with Plants

Guide to Making Decorative Candles with Plants

When making homemade candles, the base is most important. We always reach for eco-friendly rapeseed wax, and one pack is enough for several casting projects. Since we’re making candles at home, it’s up to you which container you choose to fill, but be sure to choose one made of glass. You might find a pretty yogurt jar or a small vase at home, or decide to use a canning jar. We’ll leave the choice up to you. You can also use ordinary wire to make a handle around the jar and hang the candle somewhere once it’s finished.

To start, melt about 250 g of chopped rapeseed wax in a double boiler. This should be enough for approximately one medium-sized candle. The wax should melt, but it must not boil. Place a wick in the glass jar and secure it at the top with a clothespin. Once the wick is centered in the container, carefully pour in the melted wax. Let the candle harden, then trim the excess wick.

Once the candle is finished and has hardened, we can prepare the plant decorations.

For these, we’ll prepare a piece of plastic, such as a bit of plastic wrap or plastic packaging. We’ll apply an even layer of decoupage glue to it.

We’ll spread the same layer over the glass surface of the candle. Using tweezers, we’ll place a leaf (or a flower) onto the plastic.

Then, using a brush, we’ll gently coat the top layer with decoupage glue. Slowly peel the pressed plant off the plastic surface and press it onto the glass. Coat the decoration with decoupage glue again. Use the same method to apply the remaining plant pieces.

Once the glue is dry, our handmade candle is ready.

Making handmade items is not only fun, but also a great activity that lets you relax. If you have older kids at home, you can get them involved in crafting, too. Then all that’s left is to enjoy the beautiful decoration and the cozy atmosphere of candlelight.
